'house in the field' borders the Dordogne and the Lot et Garonne.
Our local town is Monflanquin, a bastide village of stunning medieval architecture with great restaurants and shops, a delicious ice cream parlour, supermarkets, bakeries, doctors, chemist and garages.
The town hosts a spectacular annual medieval festival in August which is well worth a visit along with other nearby bastide gems like Monpazier, Villereal and Issigeac. Farmers markets can be found here on different days of the week selling wonderful local produce.
During July and August, foodie night markets (marche gourmands) can be found on different evenings in surrounding local villages where everyone congregates for great French bonhomie to enjoy local produce and delicacies washed down with good wine and live music!
For the more adventurous, the area offers 'go ape', mini golf, horse riding, golfing, climbing, caving, cycling and walking. From the adjacent village of Gavaudan there is a popular 6km walk along the river Lede which takes in a number of water mills along the way.
Canoeing and boat trips are plentiful in the area and a particularly lovely section takes you down the Dordogne past the stunning village of Rocque de Gagiac, built into the rock face. Let the current take you down, while a minibus brings you back. No hard paddling required!
Take a hot air balloon ride to enjoy the stunning landscape and architecture at its best. If you prefer your feet on the ground a visit to the nearby Chateaux Biron or Chateau de Bonaguil, a vineyard visit or a great day out on the train won't disappoint!. (See 'Getting Here' for day trips by train.)
